SLA battery-powered PMAs (personal mobility aids) such as motorised wheelchairs and mobility scooters use sealed lead-acid batteries that are dry, non-spillable, and non-lithium, giving them an extremely low risk of catching fire. 

SLA PMAs have been used in Singapore for decades without a single reported fire incident. Unlike lithium batteries, SLA batteries are not prone to thermal runaway and use non-flammable electrolytes that do not act as fuel in the event of a malfunction.

These PMAs are typically heavier and bulkier, but the added weight provides better stability and a lower centre of gravity. Their motors are usually more powerful as well, giving exceptional performance over obstacles such as low kerbs and MRT train-to-platform gaps.

However, if the PMA needs to be lightweight and foldable, such as for transport by car, travelling, or carrying over a flight of steps, lithium battery-powered PMAs are the better choice.

All our PMAs are compliant with Land and Transport Authority (LTA) 2026 rules and can be legally used on public paths in Singapore now and in the future.
