According to a report by Channel NewsAsia, new rules for mobility scooters in Singapore will take effect from 1 June 2026.
Under the updated framework, all mobility scooters sold by authorised retailers must be registered and tagged before customers can take ownership. Retailers are also required to verify that buyers have a valid Certificate of Medical Need or exemption and complete the ownership transfer at the point of sale.
Retailers have indicated that the additional inspection, registration, and administrative requirements could increase operational and logistics costs, potentially leading to price increases of up to 15% once the new rules come into force.
The Land Transport Authority has stated that it is still finalising the registration cost and will provide further details in due course.
“The key issue is accountability. If ownership transfers are not properly completed and acknowledged, the device legally remains under the distributor’s name. That creates unnecessary risk exposure for retailers, even if they have already handed the device to the end user.” as per summarising our founder Warren Chew's comment.
